Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon 1984

Magesterial.

Knock-out.

Yesterday over lunch a magmum of Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon 1984 supplied by Anel Grobler and Jan Laubscher of Spitorswallow.co.za and Winetimes.co.za. Not particularly carefully stored by their own admission, it was brilliant even so.

Still extraordinarily primary, still plenty of shape and form.  The assertion is often made that proper winemaking only began here in 1994 (I’m as guilty as anybody in this regard) but this wine proves the contrary.

Score: 95/100.

  1. So just yesterday I was graced with half a glass of the 1974 cab. My words where WOW followed by a holy shit. The nose still had fruit, little to no hints of Oxidation. The plate had weight and texture. All round a really good cab!

    Back in the days when people harvested at sensible sugar levels and nobody really cared (or knew) about pyrazines… But in those days, people assumed that you buy a Cabernet to mature it. Nowadays everything must be ready to consume NOW!
