Should mature wine command a price premium? Mike Ratcliffe, managing partner of Vilafonté recently announced the re-release of the 2005 vintage of the Series M, a blend of 52% Merlot, 17% Malbec and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon which will sell for R1 250 a bottle (compared to R400 for the soon-to-be-releases 2011).

A bottle sent for review impressed. In colour, it appeared intense black with very little evidence of advancement – the outer rim showing almost no browning. On the nose, dark fruit, chocolate and oak spice but also the beginning of some appealing savoury character which comes with time in bottle.

The palate, meanwhile, was sweet fruited and soft textured but then that’s how these wines are styled and what was remarkable was how little rather than how much development was in evidence – if you like your wine lush and dense, the Series M 2005 should serve you well for at least the next five years.

Score: 90/100.
