Always nice when a wine doesn’t conform to your preconceived idea about it. Last night a bottle of Stellenrust 46 Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2010 (from 46-year-old bush vines as designated on the label) which I anticipated would be rich and weighty. Not so.
It was indeed concentrated with nicely coated acidity but wasn’t at all thick textured and cloying as those Chenins of yesteryear tended to be. Full bodied but without sacrificing finesse. Good fruit definition – lime and peach – but also some intriguing waxy, yeasty notes. The finish dry in a stone fruit kernel rather than pithy kind of way.
Spontaneously fermented and matured for nine months in French and Hungarian oak, only partially new. Smart analysis: Abv: 14.0%, RS: 7.0 g/l, Total Acid: 7.6 g/l, pH: 3.28. Just the thing to ward off the winter chill.
