Spier Frans K Smit 2004

Brawn AND brains.

Brawn AND brains.

Last night the 2004 vintage Frans K Smit, the ultra-premium offering from Spier in Stellenbosch. 15% abv according to the back label and usually such a high alcohol is cause for trepidation – what’s in the bottle typically too powerful to provide real enjoyment.

The Frans K Smit (a blend of 30% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Pinotage, 18% Shiraz and 6% Petit Verdot) however was undoubtedly hearty but still remarkably lively – rich and dense but balanced. Red and black fruit, spice and a slight earthy quality. Satisfying in a non-geeky kind of way.

Score: 91/100.

I had what must have been a barrel sample of this (bottle was unlabeled and given to me as a gift) a few months back. Only the info on the cork to work with but undoubtedly the same wine as recorded above comparing my tasting notes to yours. I was surprised at its freshness for a 2004 and balance given the 15% abv per your note. Quality drop.
