Silvermist Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Green but not green.

Green but not green.

An exciting discovery at the Constantia Food and Wine Festival held over the past weekend was the Sauvignon Blanc 2013 from Silvermist (R140 a bottle). The vineyards are situated high on the mountain – the entrance to the property is just after Constantia Nek as the descent to Hout Bay begins – and are officially organic with certification provided by the locally based Bio-Dynamic & Organic Certification Authority. Gregory Louw, son of the owners, is winemaker and the grapes are vinified at Boekenhoutskloof in Franschhoek.

The nose is quite shy but for a note of gunpowder-like reduction. The palate, however, is very expressive with notes of white peach, yellow apple and a touch of grapefruit on entry before some white pepper bite on the finish. Good palate weight and no shortage of freshness but the acidity is not at all seering – a really compelling proposition.

Score: 89/100.
