Sijnn 2009

Strikingly unusual.

To describe the red blend under the Sijnn label from vineyards situated between Malgas and Cape Infanta as “exotic” is something of an understatement. The current-release 2009, for instance, is a blend of 46% Shiraz, 29% Mourvèdre, 13% Touriga Nacional, 6% Trincadeira and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Made by co-owner David Trafford at the De Trafford cellar in Stellenbosch, it involved spontaneous fermentation and was matured in a mix of barrels for the first year before being transferred to 700-litre barrels for a further nine months.

I’ve been a big fan of the wine since the maiden 2007, the vintages to date having a very flamboyant quality about them, both in concept and in execution. The 2009 is probably the best yet: red and black fruit, fynbos and some attractive oak-derived aromatics on the nose. On the palate, the immediate impression is one of how rich and thick-textured the wine is but vibrant acidity soon kicks in. There’s plenty of spice to go with the pure fruit and the finish is long and dry. It’s a warm and hearty wine, but one that doesn’t tip over into rusticity. Score: 17/20. Price: R180.

    I’ve only ever tasted this wine at shows, but would love to sit down and drink a bottle with someone. It seems like it might well inspire good conversation and change/evolve a bit as one goes through it.
