Estéanna is the designation for the flagship white and red from Rietvallei in Robertson, and arises from the amalgamation of winemaker and managing director Kobus Burger’s two daughters names, Esté and Annie. Scores and tasting notes below:
Rietvallei Estéanna White 2011: 15.5/20
56% Sauvignon Blanc, 31% Chardonnay, 12% Chenin Blanc and 1% Viognier. Range of flavour from lime through peach to green melon. Some pyrazine bite. Relatively thick textured but balanced by snappy acidity. Good flavour intensity but appropriateness of the blend not totally convincing – varieties seem to pull in different directions.
Rietvallei Estéanna Red 2009: 16/20
49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Cabernet Francand 3% Petit Verdot. Matured for 24 months in French oak, 100% new. Red and black fruit, attractive herbal note on the nose. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins before a long, dry finish. Nicely understated.
