True elegance is rare when it comes to South African reds but the Cabernet Franc 2011 from Raats Family Wines (R350 a bottle) pulls this off in emphatic fashion.

Grapes from granite-soil vineyards in Stellenbosch for extra freshness, the wine matured for 18 months in French oak, 25% new.

Red currant and cherry, dried herbs, subtle oak spice. Weightless intensity, lovely bright acidity and tannins which are paradoxically super-fine but also provide plenty of grip. Carefully conceived and precisely executed – hats off, Mr Raats.

    I have been drinking Raats Cab Franc since 2007 and have tasted every vintage ever made. I will however say that the 2011 is a reflection of a skill and craftmanship that has been refined over the last few years! I think Bruwer will have a hard time beating this vintage and I hope I will be there to drink it when he does! Respect to the Cab Franc King!
