As most will know, Darling property Alexanderfontein under the management of Theo Basson is source of some of the most sought after Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa. Ormonde Private Cellar owned by the Basson family makes two versions of Sauvignon Blanc of its own, namely the entry-level Alexanderfontein and the slightly more prestigious Ondine.
Alexanderfontein has a become a popular favourite on account of the great quality to price it usually offers (the 2013 already available at R49 a bottle from the cellar but not yet reviewed) while the Ondine is intended as a more serious offering and is typically deliberately held back.
Current release is the 2011 (R60 a bottle). Good in a somewhat old-fashioned style - still some lime and white pepper but also the start of some secondary character in the shape of honey and asparagus. Good weight, bright acidity, well balanced. Drink now to end-2014.
