Nederburg Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2007

Class in a glass.

I’m not immune to the charms of bottle-aged Sauvignon Blanc, but I think the notion propagated in some circles that local Sauvignon is always drunk too young is nonsense – I cannot stand that “asparagus soup” character that so many take on after two or three years in bottle.

What would Nederburg Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2007 from The Lookout Deck in Hout Bay look like? Bought at the 2009 auction and on the winelist for the princely sum of R125 a bottle, we had to give it a whirl. Absolutely sensational. Lime, winter melon and the vaguest hint of pyrazine-related paprika. Thick textured but not too much so. Well integrated acidity. Not as angular as I’m sure it was in its youth but equally totally intact, time have affected very little decline. Score: 18/20.
