Nabygelegen Seventeen Twelve 2007

Decent.

When I encountered the 2007 vintage of Bordeaux-style red blend Seventeen Twelve (R125 a bottle) from Nabygelegen in Wellington for the 2012 edition of Platter’s, I deliberated long and hard whether or not to nominate it for 5 Stars but ultimately decided not to, leaving 4½ Stars). Why? I don’t know, other than to say 5 Star wines have to have an unquantifiable X-factor about them and I think this wine falls just short.

Even so, I was delighted to see it awarded double gold at this year’s Veritas Awards. A blend of 60% Merlot, 35% Carnet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, it spent 12 months in oak, 30% new. Last night, it showed red and black fruit and some appealing savoury character on nose and palate. It’s classically styled with fresh acidity and fine, some would say powdery, tannins. Nearly six years after vintage, it appears to have peaked in terms of development but should remain on a plateau of drinkability for a while yet. Score: 17.5/20.
