Mulderbosch Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2005

On the edge.

On the edge.

The Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2005 from Mulderbosch rated a relatively lowly 3½ Stars in Platter’s 2007 but won gold at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show of the same year – it’s one of those wines that sit at a stylistic extreme involving spontaneous fermentation, high residual sugar and maturation in 100% new oak.

Yesterday, a bottle again left me in two minds.  Lime, lemon, vanilla, spice, honey and some rancio character. Rich, full and buttery – Lurpak not Clover Mooiriver.  I vacillated between thinking it was absolutely knock-out and a bit blowsy.

Score: 89/100 (the ultimate cop-out).

Despite not being a big fan of the “blowsy style”, I’ve never had a Mulderbosch Barrel Fermented Chardonnay that wasn’t impressive. Without much hesitation, I’ll ignore my own pre-conceived ideas and call them knock-outs. The 2008 is a beaut.
