Kevin Arnold Shiraz 2008

Reading matter.

Last night, dinner at Terroir, the restaurant on the Kleine Zalze property in Stellenbosch for the announcement of the Top 6 Shiraz as well as the Top 6 Dessert Wines as featured in the August/September issue of Classic Wine , the magazine published by Gauteng music station Classic FM. I had been a member of the Shiraz panel so hence my attendance.

The Top 6 Shiraz are:
4½ Stars
Bellingham Shiraz with a Splash of Viognier 2010
Saronsberg Provenance Shiraz 2010
Grande Provence Shiraz 2008

4 Stars
Boekenhoutskloof Syrah 2009
Kevin Arnold Shriaz 2008
Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Shiraz 2008

Wine of the evening for me was the Kevin Arnold from Waterford. It also won a silver medal with a score of 89 at this year’s Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show and it really is showing beautifully.

The Top 6 Dessert Wines are:
4½ Stars
Fleur du Cap Noble Late Harvest 2010
Monis Muscadel 2001
Paul Cluver Riesling Noble Late Harvest 2011

4 Stars
Mulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc Noble Late Harvest 2008
Nederburg The Winemaster’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest 2010
Neethlingshof Short Story Collection Maria Noble Late Harvest 2011

  1. Christian i understand what you mean with shut down. But i agree with your colleagues i also found a lot to like. Interestingly the classic winemag so far didnt found any 5 star wine yet in any category.

  2. Christian says:

Hi Smirrie, I scored the Boekenhoutskloof 2009 15/20 in round one and 15.5/20 in round 2. I think it’s rather shut down at the moment but clearly my colleagues on the Classic Wine panel still found lots to like…

  3. Hi Christian what were your personal rating for the Boekenhoutskloof Syrah.
