Steytler Pinotage 2006 from Kaapzicht in Stellenbosch won the international trophy for best single varietal red above £10 at the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2009 which always makes me chuckle because not many UK wine buffs openly promote the merits of the variety under normal circumstances.

Last night, a chance to check on the 2006’s progress. A quite oxidative, malty character on both nose and palate typical of the house style but also red and black cherry. As ever with serious Pinotage, curious to drink. Rich and full with a core of pure fruit but also these coarse tannins, not jarringly so but just enough to make the wine a bit rustic.

It was consumed with Malay-style chicken curry – I like Pinotage with curry as I think it pushes the tannins back and lets the fruit shine and in this particular case, the wine had more than enough grunt to stand up to the dish.

Score: 89/100.

    Pinotage is usually my go-to-red with curry as well. I had a bottle of this some months back and felt that the wine still had enough structure to age for another 4-5 years…as Danie’s wines are generally able to do. Fair review I thought.
