On Saturday, lunch at the new tasting room on Stanford Hills. Intent on giving their children a farm upbringing, Peter and Jami Kastner acquired the 131ha property in 2003. They produce indigenous flowers for export and also have 12ha of vineyard.
The tasting room affords a view of the unspoilt surrounds, really is child-friendly (the Kastners have three small boys so know the trials and tribulations of parenthood all too well) and the fare on offer delicious (the pork pie particularly memorable).
We tried the Jacksons Sauvignon Blanc Limited Release 2012 (R60) made by Gavin Patterson of Sumaridge which wasn’t too green and had nice palate weight plus coated acidity (score: 16/20) as well as the Jacksons Pinotage Limited Release 2011 (R80) made by Kastner with Luddite’s Neils Verburg acting as a consultant. Fruit-driven and surprisingly medium-bodied despite an alcohol by volume of 15% (score: 16/20).
