Hutcheson Port Colheita 1947

Old but not cold.

Last night, a glass or two of Hutcheson Port Colheita 1947, still pretty impressive despite the bottle having significant ullage. The occasion was dinner at Waterkloof restaurant, hosted by Cees van Casteren to celebrate his Master of Wine qualification achieved earlier this year. Consultant Van Casteren becomes only the second Dutch person to achieve the title and his success means that there are now 301 Masters of Wine in the world, from 23 different countries.

The subject of his dissertation was “An Examination of Chenin Blanc as the Potential Reference Wine of South Africa”, submitted three times, the first two with him arguing in favour of the proposition “referred”, the third approved when he concluded that Chenin could not yet be considered SA’s indisputable reference wine…
