What I Drank Last Night
Good Booze. Good Food. Good Company.

Elio Grasso Gavarini Langhe Nebbiolo 2011

100% stainless steel.

Yesterday a year to the day that Neil Grant, previously sommelier at Rust en Vrede, opened Burrata Restaurant at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock and by coincidence, we’d booked for dinner.

“Yip, we have beaten the stats & made it to our 1st BD” tweeted Grant earlier in the day and this restaurant really is settling down into something special – chef  Annemarie Steenkamp brings her Le Quartier Francais experience to bear and cooks trattoria-type food with a twist while Grant’s winelist is imaginative and well-priced.

To drink last night, Grant produced the unwooded Gavarini Langhe Nebbiolo 2011 from Elio Grasso, not normally available and offered to us as a bit of a treat. Concentrated red and black fruit and more than enough fruit tannin to stand up to sirloin with roasted baby onions, peas, bone marrow and salsa verde.
