Eikendal Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Reason for a party.

Jolly good lunch next to the dam at Eikendal in Stellenbosch today. This cellar, under the new regime which sees Nico Grobler as viticulturist and winemaker, is shooting up the charts. Among numerous other awards this year, gold for the Chardonnay 2011 and trophies for best in class and best red wine overall for Bordeaux-style red blend Classique 2009 at Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

Today a chance to taste the Sauvignon Blanc 2012 (R65 a bottle). 60% Lutzville and 40% Elgin grapes, 25% matured in 2nd fill barrel. A cleverly thought out wine, I liked its palate weight, bright acidity and length. At 14% alcohol by volume, it’s optimally ripe – hallelujah! Score:” 17/20.

The strategic problem that Eikendal faces is that it wants to be known as a specialist Chardonnay producer and while the unwooded Janina 2012 is not shabby, I suspect a lot of punters might prefer the Sauvignon…
