Driehoek Shiraz 2010

Not angular.

Not angular.

Driehoek in the Cederberg has been home to the Du Toit family for five generations. They recently undertook wine production, first bottling occurring in 2009 with the accomplished David Nieuwoudt of Cederberg handling things in the cellar.

The Shiraz 2010 (price: R155) comes festooned with awards stickers and it’s not difficult to see why. Super-ripe fruit and clever extraction make for a weighty, powerful wine with no rough edges.

It has to be said, though, that it’s very expressive with lots of red and black fruit and intense spice (think coriander seed and white pepper) and retains remarkable balance – alcohol by volume is 15% and residual sugar is a fairly high 4.1g/l but then TA is 6.4g/l and pH 3.4. Resistance is ultimately futile.

Score: 91/100.

  1. We have this at R135.
