Last night dinner cooked by chef Peter Tempelhoff of The Greehouse restaurant at Constantia’s The Cellars-Hohenhort hotel as a part of the first ever Big Bottle Festival organised by Jörg Pfützner of Fine Wine Events.

A celebration of large format bottles. Wine of the night was Weingut Müller Scharzhofberger Auslese Mosel 2007 out of magnum (1.5 litre), aromatic and perfectly poised. Biggest bottle served was a salmanazar (9 litres) of Domaine du Pegau Cuvée Laurence Chateauneuf du Pape 1995.

    By sheer co-incidence I had the Domaine Du Pegau Cuvee Reservee 2006 last night (from Great Domaines in Jozi), what thrilling stuff! Wild, warm open red fruit nose and soft fleshy Grenache fruit on the palate, dusted with powdery tannins. I usually think that most Cotes Du Rhone and CDR Village far better value than Chateauneuf, but the Pegau really was a few notches up the quality scale, and not a hint of clove, elastoplast or sweaty saddles.
