What I Drank Last Night
Good Booze. Good Food. Good Company.

Desiderius Pongrácz 2008

Drink from 2014 onwards.

Desiderius is the “prestige cuvee” in the Pongrácz bubbly range from producer-wholesaler Distell and the 2008 (R255 a bottle) is the first vintage of this since the 2003. 70% Chardonnay and 30% Pinot Noir, it spent 48 months on the lees. A slight yeast note on the nose while the palate is full but not too rich or evolved. Intense citrus, tangy acidity and a fine, persistent mousse. Well put together but somewhat anodyne and I suspect it will benefit from a year or two in bottle. Score: 16.5/20.

Comments

  1. A bottle from the 2000 vintage was opened last night. This, unfortunately, was the last remaining survivor, partly thanks for it being mistaken for another producer’s in a some-what over-stocked cellar. Anyway, absolute stupendous with ultra fine mouse in its more matured/experienced stage of life! I tried tracing the technicalities in Platter, but struggled partly due to the in-frequent vintages and partly due to the timing of the year (where I simply wanted to sit back and enjoy what’s in the glass in front of you). What I can say, kudos to the House of JC Le Roux!
