Constantia Uitsig Brut 2006 – 2009

Constantia Uitsig, complete with country hotel, various restaurants, vineyards and, of course, a cricket oval is on the market for R175 million (a bargain given that Klein Constantia reportedly went for R200 million when self-made billionaire Zdenek Bakala and business associate Charles Harman bought it in 2011).

The official line is that process of due diligence is under way and set for completion by end of this month or early November. Wine production is apparently going to continue “and then some” according to marketing manager Francois Theunissen.

Yesterday a vertical of the 2006 through 2009 vintages of the Méthode Cap Classique Brut, always from Chardonnay :

2006: 40% older oak, two years on the lees. Really attractive nose of citrus and brioche. Concentrated fruit, driving acidity and a fine, energetic mousse.  Great focus and still very youthful.

2007: 40% older oak, one year on the lees. Particularly yeasty on the nose. Rich and broad with a pronounced toasty quality. Soft acidity and a somewhat lazy mousse.

2008: 40% older oak, three years on the lees. Green apple, lemon and brioche. Substantial and well balanced – moderate acidty and creamy mousse.

2009: 30% older oak, three years on the lees. Intense citrus and some savoury aldehydic character. Bright acidity and starting to acquire some richness from time in bottle.

It’s a really refined, remarkably consistent bubbly that arguably deserves a higher profile than it has – current vintage is 2010 which sells for R245 a bottle.

  1. I believe that the soil there is sandy/alluvial so in viticultural terms its outrageously priced, unless of course its a developer who intends conversion to residential God forbid.
