Bouchard Finlayson Blanc de Mer 2009

Conundrum out of Rutherford, California is a multi-varietal white blend, the components of which the producer attempts to keep secret but are said to include Chardonnay, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Viognier. Some years ago my late dad and I bought a bottle back from the US to show to interested parties and I have been in awe of Thelema’s Gyles Webb as a taster ever since that when given the wine blind, he managed to pick out just about all of the five constituent varieties.

Nederburg Ingenuity White is arguably South Africa’s most high-profile multi-varietal concept white, the maiden 2007 and 2008 both having rated 5 Stars in Platter’s. The 2008 consists of 25% Chardonnay, 25% Sauvignon Blanc, 19% Semillon,13% Nouvelle, 6% Viognier, 5% each of Chenin Blanc and Rhine Riesling and 2% of Muscadel; it sells for R155 a bottle from the tasting room.

If you’re in the mood for something weird and wonderful, but don’t want to drop quite so much cash, then I can highly recommend Bouchard Finlayson’s Blanc de Mer 2009, which goes for R70 a bottle ex cellar and consists of 39 % Riesling, 28% Viognier, 13% Chardonnay, 9% Chenin Blanc, 8% Sauvignon Blanc and 3% Semillon.

Come supper last night, red was out of the question after tasting nearly 60 Bordeaux-style reds earlier in the day, We opened the Blanc de Mer and it proved not only a refreshing aperitif but also had the weight and complexity to stand up to a plate of spag bol. My only criticism would be the naff back label which includes the unattributed quotation: “Highly underrated, delightful”…

  1. Ah so it was Riesling and Viognier that had me on the fragrant varietal trail…
    Come to think of it, we should’ve made tapas or German wurst and mash – more appropriate TV supper than spag bolls for the Spain v Germany clash.
