Botanica’s Ginny Povall makes a knock-out Chenin Blanc so what particular sensibility might she bring to Pinot Noir? Her 2010 (R149 a bottle from Vino Pronto in Gardens) is from approximately 25-year-old Elgin vineyards and was matured for nine months in French oak, 65% new.

It’s really appealing – cherry, wild strawberry and red rose on the nose. Good concentration, tangy acidity and well-judged oak. Quite modern in how forward the fruit and relatively soft the tannins are but not over-reaching itself. Appropriate quality to price ratio, too.
