Much ado about old vines in recent times but the Semillon from Boekenhoutskloof has long featured such grapes – the oldest parcel planted “around 1900” and another block in 1942 on the Franschhoek riverbed.

For supper on Friday night, a steaming bowl of truffle pasta and the 2007. Fermentation begun in tank and completed in barrel. Malolactic fermentation inhibited and maturation lasting 13 months in French oak, 100% new. 5% of 2008 vintage Sauvignon Blanc added for freshness.

Yellow apple, spice, hay and thatch. A pronounced wet wool note and some savoury developed character. Good weight without being thick textured. Not perfect ( I would’ve liked just a little more verve and freshness) but utterly engaging.

  2. Found a bottle of the 2005 at my local liquor store for half price at R90. I was all like

    WOOOHOOOOO

    until I opened it. Very tired. No fruit left. Bitter finish. Can’t speak for its storage, though other tasters online drinking it over the last two years seem to concur.
    A very long way from my 98 point 2001 Vergelegen Semillon. God that was a great wine.
