Blackwater Noir 2010

Short and to the point.

Short and to the point.

Francois Haasbroek used to be at Waterford but recently went solo, making wine under the Blackwater label. I think his Pinot 2011 is good but not great (see here) but his Rhône-style blend is knock-out.

From Walker Bay, it’s a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache, matured in old, large-format barrels for some 20 months. “I want to avoid new oak but then you need patience for the process of micro-oxygenation to do its thing,” he says.

Red and black berries, fynbos, spice and some licorice. Medium bodied  with clean, pure fruit, really lively acidity and a dry, almost salty finish. Price from Vino Pronto in Gardens: R135. Score: 17/20.

  1. Congrats on the new look site Christian. Its looking great.

We had this wine soon after its release and I wasn’t at all impressed by it. Will have to revisit. I again say that I would love to hear what you think of the Blackwater Blanc and Grenache Blanc wines.
