Beau Constantia Aidan 2011 vs. Beau Constantia Lucca 2011

Beau Constantia situated on the north-facing slopes of Constantia Nek recently launched two ultra-premium red blends, named Aidan and Lucca after the children of owners Pierre and Cecily Du Preez. The wines are made by Justin van Wyk, who is also responsible for the Constantia Glen range, and both sell for R190 a bottle, although Aidan intended to be more modern, Lucca more classic.  

Aidan 2011
37% Malbec, 27% Merlot, 27% Petit Verdot and 9% Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured for 18 months in French oak, 90% new. Ultra-ripe dark fruit, vanilla and a slight brooding earthiness. Rich and broad with moderate acidity and a smooth texture. Thankfully not too sweet but ultimately lacks real excitement.

Lucca 2011
63% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Franc. Matured for 17 months in French oak, 85% new. Red and black fruit and attractive oak notes. Rich but balanced – good freshness, fine tannins. Promising – a bit short on detail at the moment but this may come with time in the bottle.
