Antebellum Chenin Blanc 2012

It's dry but you can drink it.

Right, pay attention now. The Meerhof cellar just outside Riebeek-Kasteel   is where Meerhof, Mount Abora and Mount wines get made. Meerhof is owned by Cobus Kotze, Mount Abora by Herman Redelinghuys while Antebellum is a joint venture. The nonconformist Krige Visser, previously of Avondale and La Vierge, oversees marketing while Johan Meyer attends to viticulture and winemaking.

Today the Antebellum Chenin Blanc 2012 and the Mount Abora Saffronne Rosé 2012. Scores and tasting notes:

Antebellum Chenin Blanc 2012: 16/20
Price: R60
Grapes from Paarl. Picked very early, whole bunch pressed, natural ferment in 85% tank and 15% old 300-litre barrels. On first impression, quite neutral but really quite subtle and enchanting. Very subtle notes of fynbos, citrus, bruised apple, and bee’s wax. Light bodied with a saline finish.

Mount Abora Saffronne Rosé 2012: 15/20
Price: R60
100% Cinsaut. Picked at 18⁰ Balling and made in the manner of a Cap Classique base wine – whole bunch pressing and four hours skin contact. Compelled to carry the designation “Blanc de Noir” as SAWIS deemed it too light in colour to be certified as “Rosé”. Lightly fruity offset by some spice and earthiness.

    Thanks Christian! With making base wine from Chenin -lower alcohol expressions of the variety interest me a lot. Especially with some saying we are forsaking chenin`s tell-tale acidity with harvesting late…Will seek these wines out -although 13% not all that low then.
