Among the Top 12 wines at this year’s Wine magazine Chenin Blanc Challenge, there were three wines that were unwooded: Kanu 2009, Kleine Zalze Cellar Selection Bush Vines 2010 and Leopard’s Leap 2010, which were all rated 4 Stars, while the title of the best value wine in the competition also went to an unwooded wine, namely Douglas Green 2010 (also 4 Stars).

The pick of these wines for me was the Leopard’s Leap 2010 made by Eugene van Zyl. From Agter-Paarl fruit, this wine shows wonderful fruit integrity and a great line of acidity. Flavours of green apple, lime and a slight leesy note. At R34.99 a bottle from the tasting room, it offers outstanding value. Total production was 20 000 cases so should see me through to the end of summer. If not, then I’ll have to move on to the Douglas Green 2010: R31.50 a bottle and total production amounting to 70 000 cases.

  1. Unbelievable value. Just doing a quick exchange rate valuation and I come up with around $5-50 AUD per bottle. You cannot buy anything here of this quality for under $10 (@ 65- 70 rand). SA Chenin ( purchased in SA) is back for your buck.
